🎨 Adjectives and gender
How adjectives agree with nouns, and how to guess a noun’s gender.
Three genders
Every noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, and the adjective must match it. A quick guide to the dictionary form:
A consonant at the end usually means masculine (dom, kot). An -a usually means feminine (woda, książka). An -o, -e or -ę usually means neuter (okno, morze, imię). Exceptions exist, for example mężczyzna (man) and kolega (colleague) are masculine.
Agreement in the nominative
nowy dom
a new house (masculine)
nowa książka
a new book (feminine)
nowe okno
a new window (neuter)
Singular endings of nowy
In the masculine accusative, use nowego for people and animals (widzę nowego kota) and nowy for things (widzę nowy dom).
